Botox Cosmetic™(a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria) has been used safely by ophthalmologists for over 20 years. Botox™ has been used for wrinkle therapy since the early 1990's with no serious side effects documented. The doctors at Carolina Dermatology have been treating wrinkles with Botox™ for over ten years. Botox™ injections relax the muscles that create wrinkles thereby lessening the appearance of frown lines, laugh lines and crow's feet.
A protein toxin produced by the clostridium botulinum bacteria, Botox™ improves the appearance of the facial wrinkles that occur with overuse of facial muscles.
A small amount of Botox™ is injected right into the muscles that are responsible for creating wrinkles. Botox™ effectively inactivates the muscles that produce wrinkles, thereby causing lines to either disappear or diminish. It may take a few days to notice the wrinkle smoothing effect after receiving Botox™ injections.
Some of the common areas treated include crow's feet, frown lines, laugh lines, and forehead wrinkles. Some wrinkles which have been present for a long time may not completely disappear after treatment with Botox™. But most people notice significant improvement. It creates a natural, more youthful and rested look. People who complain that their wrinkles make them look tired or angry are especially pleased with the results of Botox™.
A Botox™ treatment does not involve much discomfort because we typically use a numbing ointment on the skin before treatment. The results usually last three to six months. After that you may return for a follow-up injection. Botox™ can be used by almost anyone. Patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding or who have a neurologic disease should not use Botox™. New uses for Botox™ include reduction in sweating of hands and armpits (hyperhidrosis). Both women and men can enjoy the results of Botox™, although men usually require more of the Botox™ to achieve the desired result.
